This is me in August 2003. I was living in Kaedi, Mauritania while training for Peace Corps. My specialty was information technology. Mauritania is in the Northern part of West Africa, essentially the Sahara. I'm under the hanger seeking shelter from the hot sun. Each day the temperature rose above 105 degrees. To my left is Ishatta. She is the servant of the family, possibly even a slave. While my family sought shelter from the heat, Ishatta would continue her domestic duties. |
