1. Derive a theoretical heuristic for the variance of LC.

    LC is the final grade which is 1/3 scaled midterm and 2/3 the scaled final.

    l = ms3+ 2ms3 ms = m-m_ σm fs = f-f_ σf σl2 = l ms3+ 2fs3 = varh ms3+ 2fs3 = σms3+ 2σms3
  2. Calculate the correlation between scalmid and scalfin.

    That is in the output file.

  3. Calculate the covariance between the first two (scaled) exams.

    I would do this using:

    ρxy = σxy σxσy σxy = ρxy σxσy

    Since the correlation and the deviations are in my output. I was mistaken however about having SPSS in my lab and I can't currently see the numbers in my output. Could I get partial credit for knowing what I needed to do?

  4. Show using the variance and covariance calculations that the variance of LC precisely agrees with theory.

    I would think this is simply that the computed value of the covariance from the equation from part (a) agrees with the computed variance from part (c). I can't really do this since I can't see the output.
